Historic UMC Reorganization Pending Over LGBT Hermeneutics

In a little more than eight months the United Methodist Church will hold a Special General Conference Session to consider plans to divide into separate churches. This historic meeting has been triggered by the adoption of LGBT favoring hermeneutics similar to the NAD’s Principle-Based, Historical-Cultural (PBHC) approach to biblical interpretation. In several respects, the Methodist issues are remarkably similar to our own. While the Methodist split looks unstoppable, Adventists can still avoid a similar outcome. This extremely instructive presentation by UMC minister Thomas Lambrecht is offered here for insights Adventists might glean in order that we might “press together!” First 35 minutes is Lambrecht talk, last ten Q&A answered by Lambrecht.

Liberation Theology in The Episcopal Church 1970-2016

The article linked to by this post is a case study, made up of several timelines, showing the process of change in TEC (The Episcopal Church) which led them to their today where they are ordaining practicing homosexuals. The material is extensive. It covers TEC from before the ordination of women, into 2016 and the development of present LGBTQ issues in that church. TEC is not the SDA Church, but there are many useful things to learn from the sequence of developments there. If we are careful, we will not repeat the mistakes of others, no matter how well meaning they were so many years ago. We are sure that few Episcopalians in 1970 imagined where fateful decisions made along the way would lead their church in 2016!

A new path?

Our pastors have given thought to an article recently published on the internet and offer this little response. The article in question proposes that the Seventh-day Adventist Church not follow the path of other churches by not splitting over the question of women’s ordination. We certainly desire that the church not split! But what is the truly pivotal question, the one which determines whether we are united or divided? And why does the author avoid it? We address this in “A New Path?” FIND IT HERE.

Foundations of Women's Ordination, part 5: Homosexual Theological Entailments

Pastor Kirkpatrick continues his in-depth series in part 5. It has often been alleged (and as often denied) that the theology that sustains the ordination of women also leads inevitably to the acceptance of homosexuality in the church. Is this so? What do those pushing for homosexual “rights” in the church themselves say about the hermeneutics and approach to biblical interpretation? THis is another MSUT READ article. FIND IT HERE.

Foundations of Women's Ordination, part 1: Orientation to the Scriptures

Pastor Larry Kirkpatrick has prepared a unique series of articles titled “Foundations of Women’s Ordination.” These articles outline the theological underpinnings of the movement which, if its goal is obtained, would lead to the ordination of women as pastors in male-headship positions the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This history and theology begins outside the church, has its own goals, and is intended to transform both world and church. We have scheduled these to appear throughout June.
Part 1 in the series focuses on our “Orientation to the Scriptures.” FIND IT HERE.
